Feb 4    Lunch & Learn Seminar: 5 Requirements for a Successful Website

Ascent Web Development

Every business needs a detailed web strategy and website to compete and succeed in a web-based world. Even if you don’t directly sell online, your prospects need to be able to find you when searching for a business that offers what you do.

Sadly, many businesses either don’t take the time to develop a web marketing strategy, or they think “simply having a website” will solve their problems. These businesses are missing out and are not capitalizing on the incredible opportunities afforded to them by the web.

Whether you’re a startup or a decades-old business, whether you already have a website or are considering developing a new one, there are many things you can and should do to have a successful web presence. However, in our thirteen years of business, we’ve identified 5 Key Concepts—Requirements—that you absolutely must get right if you want to succeed on the web.

At this Lunch & Learn Event, you will:

  • Learn what these five requirements are
  • Understand the proper questions to ask yourself and/or your developer
  • See how we approach new websites, and how we develop detailed web marketing strategies
  • Benefit from viewing actual data and case studies
  • Obtain actionable knowledge and intelligence that you can put to work immediately within your business
  • Benefit from a small group format, and have all of your questions answered

Your investment of $45 guarantees a small group format, answers to your questions, and includes a fresh lunch. You will learn valuable information that can help you right away. Since space is very limited, we strongly recommend registering today before the event sells out. See you then!

“Healthcare continues to be one of the most significant expenses businesses and individuals deal with on a regular basis. Promoting ‘healthy lifestyles’ is one way in which the Chamber’s Health Services Work Group is trying to help.” Keyla Handley, the Chamber’s Director of Community & Workforce Development, commented. “We share a ‘Health Focus of the Month’ in our monthly newsletter on a specific healthcare topic, but the Work Group felt that hosting this interactive and participatory event would be another way for us to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle – for the individual and for businesses with their employees.” Handley concluded.

In addition to the booth exhibits, attendees may also attend three complimentary programs scheduled during the expo which focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Those free programs are:

- Healthy Exercise Options presented by Dana Harmon with the YMCA,
- Healthy Cooking presented by Donna Sibley with St. Vincent’s Health System,
- Diabetes Prevention presented by Keesha Nelson with the YMCA.

There will also be a Healthy Lifestyles Luncheon presentation featuring Dr. Zeila Baugh with Shelby Baptist Medical Center. The cost for the luncheon, which begins at Noon and concludes at 1:00PM, is $10 per person and includes a healthy boxed lunch from Taziki’s.  Space is limited for the luncheon and reservations are required.  For additional information on the “Healthy Lifestyles Expo” or to make a luncheon reservation please contact Keyla Handley at the Chamber (663-4542 or via e-mail at keyla@shelbychamber.org).

Founded in 1984 by Buford Salmon, America’s Thrift Stores is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.  We operate 18 stores in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana and have over 1,000 employees.  Our goal over the next 10 years is to distribute more than $100 million to our partner ministries through a growing donation network of 2,300+ locations and in-home pick up service.

What We Do:
  • We offer a new selection of thrifty treasures to customers every single day.
  • We spread the Word of Jesus Christ by financially supporting Christian-based ministries.
  • We will give $100 million over the next 10 years to Christian ministries.

Feb 27    Greater Shelby Chamber - Keeping It Real @ Shelby County High School

Seeking Volunteers for "Keeping It Real" Program at Shelby County High School

Shelby County High School freshman will get a perspective of what it cost to live in the adult world when the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce brings its ShelbyOne Initiative program "Keeping it Real" to the school on February 26 & 27.

The first day students learn the difference between gross and net income and the importance of budgeting.

The second day students visit 12 stations with their income worksheets to pay bills that corresponded with expenses. Volunteers are needed on the second day only.

The program is co-sponsored by The UPS Store Caldwell Mill Road and Legacy Community Federal Credit Union.

Keyla Handley, Community and Workforce Development Director, is seeking volunteers for 1/2 - one day on Friday, February 27. Volunteers will manage a station (Ex: housing, groceries, clothing, insurance, education, child care, etc.) to assist 9th grade students as they "pay bills" and make "life choices" based on a random-assigned life scenario.

If you are interested in being a volunteer for a few hours or the day, please call 663-4542 or email Keyla.

Volunteers would arrive at Oak Mountain High School as early as 7:30AM and the program would conclude by 3:00PM. Lunch is provided for all volunteers.
