Mar 5 - Mar 27    Cescilia Llorente Solo Exhibit Opening Shelby County Arts Council

Cescilia Llorente Fowler, the winner of the 2014 SCAC Juried Art Exhibit, will open her solo exhibit on March 6 from 6:00-8:00pm. 

Cescilia was born in Mexico City.  The artist's mother taught her at an early age- giving her support and motivation with of her projects. Her career began as an artist and painter age at the age of 12, traning with Ma. de Lourdes Valdes. She took many painting classes using different techniques and materials.  Cescilia  designed and painted scene for stage plays and children's theater in 1991 and 1992.  She began giving painting classes for children, adolescents in 1976, in 1993 began giving classes to adults.  Cescilia has created more than 800 different works with varios techniques and materials. Her art is owned and displayed in many countries- Argentina, Colombia, England, Germany, Poland, New Zeland, Spain, Mexico and The United States in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina and Texas.

Other Recent awards include the People Choice Award (2013), Watercolor Society of Alabama (WSA) Members’ Showcase and Merit Award (2014) for the Watercolor Society of Alabama (WSA) Members’ Showcase.

The Gallery Exhibit will be from March 6 - March 27, 2015.  Gallery Hours are 10am - 5pm, Monday - Thursday (104 Mildred Street, Columbiana, AL). For questions about the exhibit contact the Sheby County Arts Councial at  205 669 0044.

Greater Shelby Chamber Go & Grow Workshop: “Creating Messages That Work”

On March 10, the Chamber’s Go & Grow Workshop -- sponsored by Charter Business and facilitated by Michael Smith of The Great, The Good and The Gone -- will provide strategies and action steps for attendees to create and deliver messages that will grow their business. Topics covered during this hands-on and interactive workshop include:

Seeking Volunteers for "Keeping It Real" Program at Chelsea High School

Chelsea High School freshman will get a perspective of what it cost to live in the adult world when the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce brings its ShelbyOne Initiative program "Keeping it Real" to the school on March 11 & 12.

The first day students learn the difference between gross and net income and the importance of budgeting.

The second day students visit 12 stations with their income worksheets to pay bills that corresponded with expenses. Volunteers are needed on the second day only -- Thursday, March 12.

The program is co-sponsored by The UPS Store Caldwell Mill Road and Legacy Community Federal Credit Union.

Keyla Handley, Community and Workforce Development Director, is seeking volunteers for 1/2 - one day on Thursday, March 12. Volunteers will manage a station (Ex: housing, groceries, clothing, insurance, education, child care, etc.) to assist 9th grade students as they "pay bills" and make "life choices" based on a random-assigned life scenario.

If you are interested in being a volunteer for a few hours or the day, please call 663-4542 or email Keyla.

Volunteers would arrive as early as 7:30AM and the program would conclude by 3:00PM. Lunch is provided for all volunteers.

GSCC March Community Luncheon to feature "Guide to Becoming Green"

The GSCC March Community Luncheon will feature a panel presentation on a “Guide to Becoming Green” and potential benefits to having a "Green Business" approach. The program, hosted by our Existing Business & Industry Work Group will feature a time for Q & A from our panelists on topics such as:
  • Why a Business Would Choose to Become Green
  • Expenses Involved in Going Green
  • The Return on Investment in Becoming Green.
The panel consists of varied business professionals; two small business Chamber certified green businesses: Buck Creek Stained Glass, David Schlueter and Trash Taxi, Roberto Rodriguez; and two utility providers Alabama Power Company, Kevin Grigsby and Alagasco, Steve Roberson.

Doors open at 11:00AM for networking and the Showcase Feature which will be a variety of exiting business and industry throughout Shelby County.  Program will conclude at 1:00PM.

The luncheon will be held at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena, 500 Amphitheater Road, Pelham. Investment is $20 members, $30 "Future" members.  Reservations requested by noon Monday, March 23.  Register by calling the Chamber at 663-4542 or click the Register Online button above.

“Eggs & Issues Breakfast” to Feature Washington Update from Congressman Gary Palmer

Gary Palmer, the new Congressman for Alabama’s 6th Congressional District, was elected this past November and sworn into office in January. During his first term in Congress he will serve as a member of these three Congressional Committees: Oversight & Government Reform, Budget and Space, Science & Technology.  He was also appointed as the representative for Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina to the Republican Policy Committee.

On March 31, Congressman Palmer will join us for an “Eggs & Issues” Breakfast event from 7:30AM-9:00AM at the Birmingham Marriott Hotel and provide a Washington Update. Time permitting we will open the floor to questions from those attending.

This event, sponsored by Alabama Power Company, is co-hosted by the Greater Shelby County, Calera, Hoover, Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills chambers of commerce.
