May 2    Barking Bargains & Meow Market Indoor Yard Sale Benefiting Shelby Humane Society
On Saturday, May 2nd, from 8 am ? 12 noon, the Best Friends of Shelby Humane Society is hosting Barking Bargains & Meow Market, an indoor rummage sale at the Shelby County Exhibition Center. Admission is free to attend. It is cash only and all sales are final. Come early on Friday, May 1st from 6 -8 pm for the first chance to purchase the best items. Friday night only will have a $10 admission fee at the door. Items are needed to sell! Please consider donating to our sale ? furniture, household and office items, gently used clothing and shoes, toys, antiques, collectibles, working electronics and appliance and books. Collection dates are Wednesday, April 29th, 10 am - 2 pm or 5 - 7 pm and Thursday, April 30th, 10 am - 2 pm or 5 - 7 pm. Drop off at the Shelby County Exhibition Center. Donation receipts available for your tax purposes. Shelby Humane Society's mission is to care for homeless, abused, neglected and abandoned animals and educate the community to instill an increased awareness and commitment to the responsibility of animal ownership and protection. May 8    Cornerstone Christian School Auction
Cornerstone Christian School is a private school in rural Alabama serving students in Pre-K3 through 12th grade. Currently we have 214 students. We pride ourselves in the affordability we are able to provide to students from a variety of socioeconomic homes. In order to keep our tuition extremely low, we offer a scholarship program, a tuition assistance program, and hold two school wide fundraisers annually. The Auction, our Spring Fundraiser, will be May 8, 2015. Each grade level is responsible for securing donations to create one or more themed "tables" to be auctioned. The grade level earning the highest bids gets a day out of school and the teacher earns a prize, also.

We’re all passionate about certain things that are important to us, but how do we fuel that urgency in others to get them to act?  On May 12, the Chamber is hosting a workshop that can provide business owners and managers with specific ways to encourage their employees and associates to share their passion and make things happen. Attendees for this hands-on and interactive workshop will learn:

- What Makes People Act on Ideas?
- How Do Your Turn Prospects into Clients Now?
- How Do You Build Urgency To Act in Others Without Turning Them Off?
- Getting the People That Work for You & With You To Make Things Happen.

The workshop, sponsored by Spectrum Business and facilitated by the Chamber’s “Entrepreneur-in-Residence” Michel Smith with The GREAT, The GOOD and The GONE, will be from 11:30AM-2:00PM at the Chamber. May 20    Birmingham Franchise Expo
FranNet of Alabama will host the Birmingham Franchise Expo 2015 for aspiring entrepreneurs on Wednesday, May 20. Two sessions are available to accommodate schedules. There will be a morning session from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and an afternoon session from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The same information will be offered at both sessions. Attendees will hear from over 20 successful and proven franchise companies that desire to expand in the Birmingham market. Franchise industry experts will present information on topics covering the steps to owning a franchise and how to fund a franchise. There will be an opportunity to interact with each franchise company before and after each session.

The Chamber's Small Business Work Group will host events during the month to Celebrate Small Business during the month of May. With more than 70% of our Chamber members classified as small businesses we want to recognize the positive economic impact small business has on Shelby County.

?  Small Business Nominees? Reception on May 18 at Vizzini Winery (by invitation only).
?  2015 Small Business of the Year Awards Luncheon, sponsored by Regions Bank will recognize all nominees and announce the Small Business of the Year recipients -- in four different categories, on May 20.
?  2015 Small Business of the Year Awards Luncheon, sponsored by Regions Bank, featuring comments from Dick Cross, Executive Director, Summer Classics. Catering provided by The Happy Catering Co.

The investment for members is $20 per person and $30 per person for "Future" members.
