Feb 5    Inaugural University of Montevallo Lacrosse Match
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s lacrosse team will make its debut Friday, Feb. 5 in a match against Point University, marking the first ever National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II women’s lacrosse match in the state of Alabama.

Montevallo’s inaugural team will take on the Skyhawks, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) located in West Point, Georgia, in the first match in program history. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the University of Montevallo Lacrosse/Track and Field Stadium.

Admission to the first women’s lacrosse match at Montevallo is free of charge. Members of the Greater Birmingham Youth Lacrosse Association are encouraged to attend wearing their uniform representing their community.

The Falcons, led by head coach Frank Rogers, feature student-athletes from nine different states and three separate Canadian provinces. The lacrosse student-athletes traveled an average of 797 miles from their respective hometowns to continue their playing careers at Montevallo.

Rogers, who was hired in January 2015 to lead the newly established program, successfully recruited 19 student-athletes from all across North America to the University of Montevallo with his ties to the national lacrosse community. Rogers has spoken at the U.S. Lacrosse National Coaches Convention nine times and has served on the National Women’s Lacrosse League Coaches Committee.

The Montevallo program is the third program Rogers has built from scratch. Rogers was named the first head coach in the history of the Aquinas University women’s lacrosse program in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2009 and led the school to a 20-2 record in its inaugural season in 2010.

Rogers arrived at Montevallo after serving as the first head coach in the history of the Brevard College women’s lacrosse program in Brevard, N.C. in 2014. Should the Falcons win on February 5, it would give Rogers a milestone 100th career victory, as he currently has 99 career wins as head coach.

Fans can keep up with all the action of the upcoming game by following Montevallo Falcons Lacrosse on Facebook, or Montevallo Falcons on Instagram or Twitter.

Feb 10 - Feb 13    University of Montevallo 2016 College Night Productions

UM PREPARES FOR ANNUAL COLLEGE NIGHT CELEBRATIONS

Montevallo, Ala. – The University of Montevallo will hold its College Night activities this week, the University’s longest running tradition and one of the most unique collegiate events in the nation.

In its 97th year, the event has been celebrated annually during the second week in February since 1919, coinciding with University homecoming festivities. The culminating performance of this year’s College Night productions will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium.

The University splits into rivaling Gold and Purple sides for the event, taking part in various competitions, including College Night volleyball and soccer games and a basketball game at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, with points being accumulated through all events.

The crowning event of College Night is the completely student-created musical production. Everything from scripts, music, lyrics, costumes, choreography, sets and lighting are student produced for the shows that are performed Wednesday through Saturday night.

After all pre-production events and production points have been tallied, the winning side will be announced as either a Purple Victory or Gold Victory and will receive bragging rights for the remainder of the year.

“College Night is the most special thing to me, because it is a chance when our school can split into two sides and do something that is so individual and at the same time come together and make something great for the University,” Purple Side student leader James Powers said of the event.

The event, which challenges students from all over campus and across disciplines to work together while juggling rehearsals and classes, allows student leadership opportunities and a chance to build camaraderie with classmates in an event rarely ever reproduced.

“This is a time for our school to come together and create something that no other school has ever done before,” Michael Cleary, Gold Side student leader stated.

College Night was named a “Local Legacy” by the Library of Congress in 2000 and has an exhibit in its honor in the American Folklife Center.

For more information about this years activities and instructions of purchasing tickets, visit the College Night Tickets webpage.

Please contact Carrie Smith, Media Relations and Communications Specialist at (205)665-6227, for more information or media inquiries for the College Night events.

Feb 17    Cornerstone Christian School Open Enrollment Begins
Our desire is to provide a quality, Christ-centered education to any family that genuinely desires one for their children. Like any school, we charge tuition for our services, which enables us to compensate our staff of excellent teachers. However, our staff and parents also believe in the New Testament model of community living-that those with abundance are called to extend a hand to those without. Two programs exist to help families with need. 1) We partner with Scholarships for Kids under the Alabama Accountability Act to provide scholarships to families earning less than 200% of the federally-defined poverty level. 2) The Need-Based Tuition Assistance program through FACTS enables us to support families that don't qualify for the S4K program, as well as families who were already in our school before the passage of the Accountability Act. These two programs so far have enabled us to serve over 100 families that wouldn't otherwise be able to afford a private education. We have financial aid students in each grade K3-12: students that play sports and those that don't, students that make good grades and those that struggle. Some families qualify for significant reductions, some don't qualify for any reduction, and some land in-between-but no one comes for free, since Cornerstone believes that parents should be willing to invest into their children's education as much as they are feasibly able to. The starting point for both programs is our preliminary application, which we will use to set up a tour and consultation for your family. If you've already toured and are ready to apply for admission, you may do so by clicking through to our online application. Should you have any questions, please contact us by calling 205-669-7777 or drop an email to Eric Wilson, who manages the financial aid program on-campus.
