Greater Shelby Chamber ~ Annual Prayer Breakfast
The Annual Prayer Breakfast is designed for members to come together to fellowship, celebrate, and give thanks for our many blessings. It’s also a time to focus on what’s truly important in life and inspires us to make a difference in the lives of others.
This unique event is a favorite for many because of the opportunity for our Chamber family to come together and share spiritual appreciation. Make plans to attend this heartwarming program and usher in the holidays with us.
This year we are privileged to have Lisa Latham, Grace's Kitchen as our keynote speaker. Read about the beginnings of Grace's Kitchen:
Grace’s Kitchen is the calling on the lives of two Birmingham, Alabama, women who desire to follow in obedience. While serving in a soup kitchen on a mission trip to Louisville, Kentucky, Lisa Latham and Paula Hughes both heard God telling them to feed people. As they pondered what the Spirit was calling them to do, they knew that they wanted to serve food to those in need with dignity and respect. After returning home, Lisa and Paula began to pray, research, and dream about what this calling looked like. They wanted to create a ministry that would generate funds for its operations; the concept of a pay-as-you-can restaurant was really appealing. In their research, they came across SAME Café in Denver, Colorado, which was successfully operating on this model. (In March 2010, Lisa and Paula visited SAME and its owners Brad and Libby Birky to get a first-hand look at how the restaurant worked, everything from working with volunteers and creating menus to financial specifics.)
Because opening a restaurant is a long-term project, Lisa and Paula prayed about an interim step. In October 2009, Grace’s Kitchen began serving breakfast once a week in Linn Park in downtown Birmingham. (As of this writing, more than 3,000 meals have been given away.) Each person who is served breakfast also receives a lunch bag to take with him or her; included in each food bag is a handwritten Bible verse. A team of volunteers serves in the park each Thursday. While there, the team gathers those who have come to eat for a time of scripture reading and prayer.
Grace’s Kitchen plans to operate as a nonprofit restaurant in downtown Birmingham. There will be no set prices for anything on the menu; instead, diners will simply pay whatever they can afford for their meal. The emphasis will be on fresh, healthy food. The ministry’s vision is to glorify God by providing good food, served with dignity to the inclusion of all. Everyone will be welcome. For more information visit: http://graceskitchen.org/.
Grace’s Kitchen is based on biblical principles and desires to answer the call in Isaiah 1:17: “Work for justice. Help the down and out. Stand up for the homeless. Go to bat for the defenseless.” The focus is food but the purpose is to offer nourishment to the body and the spirit.
