GSC ~ Membership Luncheon ~ Shelby County Drug Court

Event Sponsors

First Commercial Bank of Pelham

Join us for the July Membership Luncheon as Shelby County Presiding Circuit Judge Mike Joiner and Chief Assistant District Attorney Bill Bostick will be our guest speakers.  They will give a presentation on Shelby County Drug Court, an innovative program which has gained statewide recognition in recent months.

Judge Joiner is a graduate of Samford University and Cumberland School of Law where he served as an Editor of the Law Review. He practiced law in Shelby County for 10 years prior to his election as Circuit Court Judge in 1992. He has handled thousands of civil, criminal and domestic cases. As a result of handling criminal cases, especially death penalty cases involving drug abusing teenage defendants, he saw the dire need for a change in the way the criminal system deals with addiction.  In 2002, he created the Shelby County Drug Court program which has become a model statewide. In 2007 he was appointed by Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb as co-chair of a statewide Drug Court Task Force to implement Drug Courts in all 67 counties in Alabama. His program has over 800 graduates and 200 current participants.

Bill Bostick is a graduate of Birmingham Southern College and the University of Alabama School of Law.  He came to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office in 1995, and has served as Chief Assistant District Attorney since 2001.  Bill has been an adjunct professor of law at the University of Alabama School of Law since 1995 and is past president of the Shelby County Bar Association and chair of the Criminal Justice Section of the Alabama State Bar.  Bill currently serves as chair of the Shelby County Community Corrections Corporation, a nonprofit organization which administers Drug Court and other sentencing options in Shelby County.  A career prosecutor, Bill has helped develop Drug Court as an efficient, cost-effective public safety initiative which has reduced the number of repeat offenders in Shelby County.

Be sure to join us for networking and the meet the businesses participating from the city of Columbiana in the Spotlight City Feature beginning at 11 am.
