Over the last several months there have been several City Council meetings regarding the future of the Pelham Civic Center which houses the Pelham Ice Rink utilized by figure skaters, youth and adult hockey teams, the University of Alabama Frozen Tide and the community at large.
With the upcoming August 28th municipal election nearing, the Pelham Civic and Ice Complex Advisory Council is sponsoring a forum open to the public with all three mayoral candidates. Each candidate-former Pelham fire chief Gary Waters, current City Council member Steve Powell and incumbent Mayor Don Murphy have accepted the invitation to attend. The forum will be moderated and an opportunity to learn more about their future intentions focused on the ice rink. Questions from the public can be submitted via the PCC&ICAC website: http://www.pccalliance.org/mayoral-forum
Several discussions have been held after considering a failed attempt in April to convert the civic center to a fire museum. Proposals have been made to either hire a management company to manage the center or sell the ice rink to a private vendor.
The meeting is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, July 19th at 7PM.
