Shelby County Celebrating 192 Years - Join in the Celebration Event!

Sunday, February 7, 2010 -- Click here for a printable flier.

On Sunday, February 7, 2010 Shelby County will turn 192 years old, being named after Isaac Shelby. The first county seat was located in Shelbyville [now known as Pelham] and moved in 1826 to Columbia [now known as Columbiana].

The Shelby County Historical Society will host its next Quarterly Meeting on this date [February 7, 2010] beginning at 1:45 pm.with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

In October 1979 there was an election held in Columbiana to determine if the old courthouse would be torn down or restored. It won by one vote to not be destroyed; thus, the Shelby County Commission acquired back its ownership and today this old courthouse that was built in 1854 is the home of the Shelby County Museum & Archives.

In 1980 the Shelby County Historical Society, along with the Shelby County Commission, undertook the project of restoring this building to its original structure. A proud history challenges us to preserve the legacy of Shelby County Alabama. Within the past five years the Shelby County Historical Society acquired financial support through grants and have obtained many more artifacts for this "History Museum." With the support of the Shelby County Commission and the Probate Office the Archives have been updated and is now one of the best in the state of Alabama. The original old Shelby County courthouse records are maintained here.

... "A Genealogist and Historian Paradise" ...
To celebrate our county’s birthday and the renovation of the Shelby County Museum & Archives  many organizations and businesses have joined together to help make this a big event.

The Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and the South Shelby County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The First Baptist Church of Pelham will furnish special music and the keynote speaker will be our Shelby County Probate Judge Jim Fuhrmeister.

The people of Shelby County are encouraged to come and celebrate this occasion with us.

Refreshments furnished by several Shelby County businesses will be served at various locations.
In addition, the birthday cake will be furnished by the City of Pelham and Bud’s Best Cookies will furnish free bags of cookies to the children and youth that are present.

Thanks to the Shelby County Reporter and others for their support and advertising of this event.
There will be souvenirs and free tours of the museum.

A plaque will be displayed indicating the business in Shelby County that "custom built" the mahogany display cabinets as well as the names of those organizations that made this project possible through their financial support.

PLEASE COME AND BE A PART OF THIS HISTORIC CELEBRATION.
